Birdwatching
The North Shore’s diverse ecosystems—from salt marshes and tidal flats to dense forests and rocky shorelines—provide an inviting habitat for a variety of bird species, many of which are best seen in the colder months. And the colder temperatures also mean fewer visitors, so you’ll have the trails, beaches, and birding spots mostly to yourself, making for a peaceful and immersive birdwatching experience.
- The Trustees is known for hosting many outdoor winter events, including their Snowy Owl Prowl starting December 1st (Ipswich).
- Mass Audubon’s Ipswich Wildlife Sanctuary (Topsfield/Wenham) offers 12 miles of interconnecting trails to explore forests, wetlands, and meadows. Pro Tip: bring bird seed and you may be able to feed the birds straight from your hand!
- Additional popular winter birding sites include Salisbury Beach State Reservation, Plum Island, and Cape Ann
